Downtown Seattle Mac Kid Review: Dear EvanHansen at The Paramount

By Sophal Hamaker January 27, 2019

My daughter and I have a ritual with it comes to seeing a show:  Dinner at Johnny Rockets, she gets a soda and I get a glass of wine at the theater, and we watch the show.  It all sounds a bit of ordinary, but this show made it more than ordinary ... it was EXTRAORDINARY!

I will not spoil the show for anyone if they have not seen it, as I wish parents of every adolescent (prepubescent to high school) go see this as the topic of this wonderfully presented show is very relevant.  It contains profanity and sexually suggestive content, just a warning to parents.  However, as a parent to both a young adult and a grade schooler, I felt the topic was appropriate for ALL ages!

The cast is lead by a talented young actor by the name of Stephen Christopher Anthony.  His portrayal of Evan Hansen invoked my own anxiety as a high school kid.  His interactions with his schoolmates made it all the more real to relate - from the crush on Zoe to his banter with Jared, Connor, and Alana.  His relationship with his mother is what every mother goes through with a teenaged son.  She, however, has me beat with patience ... #momfail.  The way he curated his relationship with his crush's family.  All of this unfolds with just a simple letter which culminates in a rather important lesson.

I took my 10 yr old daughter to see this and by the end of the show, she learned what she needed to and was able to explain and discuss the tagline, #youwillbefound, openly with me.  She got more than just a burger and night out with her mom, she gained a new insight on being and accepting herself.
